Lake Land College alumnus and Danville area dentist, Jameson Baumgarten of St. Joseph, Ill., recently donated a 1997 Mazda Miata to the Lake Land College Automotive Technology Program. The donation has an estimated value of $10,000.
“Owning this car isn’t very practical for me right now, and I knew Lake Land did work with donated vehicles in their classes, so it was a great fit,” said Baumgarten, who graduated from the college in 1993 with an associate degree in biological sciences. “I’d also heard about the Volkswagen that had been converted to electric power and thought this vehicle would add to the college’s efforts in teaching sustainability.”
As a car hobbyist, Baumgarten altered the Miata to be 90 percent electric. According to Kevin Miller, automotive technology instructor, this will expand students’ hands-on training opportunities.
“We’re very grateful to have this vehicle for our automotive students,” said Miller. “It will allow them to see the different aspects of automotive repair and maintenance.”
